The New Way To Improve Vero Cell Lines and Their Yields
You need to improve your Vero cell culture live virus production yields.
But there are so many parameters to experiment with.
Finally, an easy answer.
Vero cells are kidney epithelial cells commonly cultured for many research and biomedical purposes:
- Vero cells are common in virus production for research (such as virus replication studies), vaccine manufacturing and drug testing
- The Vero cell line has been used in several live virus production systems
- One Vero cell assay is screening for bacterial toxicity
- Vero cells are used as hosts to generate eukaryotic parasites
Problems With Culturing Vero Cell Lines
Vero cells are suitable for large-scale vaccine production because they grow well in bioreactors with a high viral yield. Unfortunately, Vero cells are also extremely susceptible to infection from viruses (such as polio, influenza, and rubella), as well as bacteria and fungi.
Vero calls are traditionally cultured in vitro in medium containing animal-derived serums, such as BSA and other animal-derived proteins. This causes several problems:
- Bovine additives can infect the cells with bacteria, viruses and prions, particularly bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease), which can be transmitted to the product
- Productivity suffers due to variability from animal-derived medium components
- Poor Vero cell viability leads to longer cell doubling times and long production cycle times
- Live virus production titres and viral yields from Vero cells can vary significantly between batches
In large-scale live virus production, a clearly defined and reproducible process is critical. Animal-derived serums, although rich in growth factors, have several serious disadvantages. Many of the common problems and limitations encountered with commercial and laboratory Vero cell culture come from the bovine-derived serum and media additives.
The Solution: An Alternative to Animal-Derived Serum And Other Additives
InVitria has researched ways to reduce these risks and improve performance and yields by developing animal- and serum-free media supplements that optimize performance of Vero cell systems
Our company bypasses the need for animal serum by producing a new product: a recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA), also known as CellastimTM, from an animal-free production system.
- Consistently optimizes Vero cell culture
- Increases live virus production titres and overall viral yields of Vero cell lines
- Safe, defined and completely animal-free
How Does CellastimTM Work?
Extensive research studies show that when added to Vero cell culture medium instead of bovine serum, CellastimTM:
- Increases adherent cell growth and division, leading to a faster doubling time
- Increases the live virus production titre from Vero cells
- Reduces the effect of mechanical shear during the production process, protecting cells
- Produces consistent results from lot-to-lot, which is ideal for biomanufacturing
CellastimTM not only outperforms bovine serum additives in Vero cell medium, but also eliminates the risk of animal derivatives, improves consistency and better meets regulatory requirements.
